Social Networking in the K-12 Classroom

I had the pleasure to hear Judy Campf and Jodi O’Neill from Baltimore County Schools speak at the eSummit Conference at Loyola College today.  Here is a summary of the session:

What is social networking? Social networking allows you to be part of a community and collaborate by email, chat, blogging, wikis, podcasts, webinars, discussion posts, etc. Social networking sites include: Twitter, WebKins,  My Space, Facebooks, UTube, wikispaces, wetpaint, and more.

Web 2.0 vocabulary that is heard around the Internet: aggregator, blog, wiki, social bookmarking, open source, Moblog, online photo galleries, RSS, podcast, – just to name a few.

Web 2.0 sites to explore for educational purposes:

  1. Voice Thread
  2. Blurb: make your own books online
  3. Wikispaces
  4. WetPaint: free website wikis
  5. Wiktionary: a free dictionary on a wiki
  6. WikiSpecies: wiki for all living things – no matter how small
  7. Zoho Writer: Collaborate on documents online
  8. SchoolTube: videos, audio, images that are dedicated for school use
  9. Wiki Junior: The aim of this project is to produce age-appropriate non-fiction books for children from birth to age 12
  10. Ajax Write: a web-based word processor that can read and write Microsoft Word and other standard document formats
  11. Glypho: read and write stories and novels in a collaborative manner
  12. WikiQuote: Collection of famous quotes
